Harlem Renaissance High School is dedicated to providing our current students with the proper resources. Our extra and co-curricular activities compliment in-class learning.
Chess Club
In this club, you will learn basic techniques to play chess. If you are already a chess player, you can compete with classmates to become a stronger player.
Crochet and Crafts Club
In this club we will learn how to crochet. Based on the participants’ interests, we will learn more advanced methods of crocheting by using patterns to create items of clothing and/or accessories, or we will explore other crafts that use simple art materials to create really cool useful things. Go home happy!
Film Club
In this club, you will view and discuss a variety of films based on the theme of Harlem Renaissance.
Fitness Club
This club will incorporate aerobics, muscle building, and muscle toning to achieve a full body workout. Through the class, you will have the opportunity to tone your muscles using your own body strength to maintain a healthy and fit body.
Football / Basketball / Softball Club
You will learn the basics of the above three major U.S. sports through the implementation of drills, practice and simulated games. Each class will begin with a minimum of two warm-ups and one technique drill. Thereafter, you will be able to engage in evenly matched games for their athletic enjoyment. Football will run concurrent with the winter months, while basketball and softball will carry into the spring and summer months respectively. During days of inclement weather, you will be asked to discuss your opinions on the prominent figures in the game as well as utilize the internet to review fantasy leagues and statistics. Those interested in “activity” should apply. Those interested in inactivity need not apply!
Music Club
You will explore various vocal genres and styles, participate in ensemble and solo performances and improvise on music that you already know.
Peer Mediation Club
Conflict is not necessarily a negative thing. Explore what creates conflict, and how to negotiate to get needs & desires met, in a nonviolent way, creating understanding, compassion, and respect. Through the technique of drama techniques, this club will give you to skills to become a peer mediator for fellow HRHS students.
Recycling Club
You will discuss the issues of recycling. We will work together to implement a recycling program at HRHS.
School Newspaper Club
The school newspaper club is recruiting students to assume the role of reporters for a variety of columns. There will also be photographer positions and an assistant editor also available. Students will be required to submit an article a week for publication with an opportunity to earn additional credits if you are eligible for an independent study.
Sewing Club
You will learn the basic skills in order sew basic projects. As you become more skilled, you will participate in a school fashion show.
Young Men’s Club
In this club we will discuss/build/learn about day-to-day issues that we go through including healthy relationships, legal rights/responsibilities and transitioning from high school graduation to life as a man.
Young Women’s Club
In this club you will be part of a safe space to discuss the issues that young teenage women face every day. We use drama, art and creative writing to develop coping strategies.
