Arts

The Arts department is the cornerstone of Harlem Renaissance High School. It provides chorus, dance, drama, photography, piano and visual art. These various art forms allow students to explore their creative side, and allows them be successful in a non-traditional setting.

Upon completion, the students will:

  • have respect for music as art and an integral part of life
  • competence in the use of various tools and art media
  • understand the basic elements of art principles

Some classes available in this Department are:

  • Advanced Piano
  • Advanced Chorus
  • Desktop Publishing, Advertising, and Sales
  • Art Around Us: From Prehistoric Times till Now, From Infants to Adults

 

Electives

There are a variety of electives to support students at different levels. The Foundations Course provides students the support necessary as they transition to a new school. Technology and business courses give students skills to help them become entrepreneurs. Senior Seminar supports a student as they transition out of high school and into the world of college and work.

Some classes offered are:

  • Introduction To Technology
  • Advanced Computer Applications
  • Introduction to HRHS/Foundations

 

Foreign Language

The Foreign Language Department at Harlem Renaissance High School provides Spanish classes that focuses on proficiency in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and are grounded in culture. Students are given the opportunity to explore the language and traditions of various Spanish-speaking countries. This way, as student’s proficiency increases, they will continue to discover similarities and differences between Hispanic cultures and their own.


At the end of the year, the students will show:

  • proficiency in writing and speaking skills
  • increased ability in reading and listening skills
  • understanding of the culture and civilization

 

History

This department is committed to providing a strong background in human history. The History department offers courses in Global History and U.S. History grounded in the essential skills necessary to be successful in understanding history. Courses also make connections between historical and current events, and the future of our world.

Upon completion, the students can:

  • compare their lives with those of people in other eras and circumstances
  • examine history through various literature
  • be familiar with variety of interpretations of the major themes of History

  • Ancient History and You
  • World History 1500-1900
  • U.S. History
  • U.S. History & Government
  • Participation in Government

 

Mathematics

The Mathematics department gives students the foundation of mathematical concepts with a twist, and accommodates students with varied background and aptitude in Mathematics. Consumer math focuses on real estate, budgeting and taxes. Digital Media Math combines math and photography. Science-Matics combines math and science.

Upon completion, the students will:
  • have higher-level critical thinking and problem solving ability
  • be able to apply previously learned mathematical concepts and skills into new situations
  • use technology as tools for exploration and investigations

  • Math A1- Algebra 1
  • Math A2- Algebra 2
  • Math A3- Algebra 3
  • Math A4- Geometry 1

 

Physical Education

Physical Education combines literacy and athletics. Each student sets health goals that are monitored throughout the course. The goal is for every participant to receive the skills to live healthy lifestyles. The students go through a self-assessment phase, then determine what steps need to be taken to improve their health and well-being. Students then implement these methods, and monitor progress.

 

Science

The Science department offers regents in Earth Science and Living Environment. It also gives a variety of elective courses such as Ecology, Forensic Chemistry and Physics that give students an opportunity to connect science to the world around them.

Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate an ability to solve the unknown
  • use modern technology in scientific investigation
  • demonstrate an understanding of the specifics related respective science courses
